    Thomas Hardy, English novelist and poet who set much of his work in Wessex, his name for the counties of southwestern England. His most notable novels include Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d’Ubervilles, and Jude the Obscure. Thomas Hardy was born near Dorchester (which would become Casterbridge in his stories) in southern England. He planned to take holy orders but lost his faith in his twenties. After studying architecture in London, he returned to Dorchester where he did architectural work, while writing on the side.

    Thomas Hardy was born on 2 June in the village of Higher [Upper] Bockhampton in Stinsford parish near the town of Dorchester in Dorset County, England, the first of four children born to Jemima nee Hand () and Thomas Hardy Sr. (), builder and stonemason. His birthplace, built by his great grandfather, is now a museum. Thomas Hardy, whose books include Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, was one of the most influentual novelists and poets of England's Victorian era.
